Guitar Case Analysis

This is a guitar case for ‘Marvin Powell Pig Pickes’, which is on an acoustic guitar case. The case is in the shape of the guitar with the handle by the neck of the guitar and has three clips to hold the lid down. The case has a banner with ‘Marvin Powell’ over a picture of a car that is on the main part of the case. The main colours that have been used are red, gold, white, black and blue on the black background of the case. This case is aimed at the band members to help promote their band. The typography used on ‘Pig Pickes’ is an old style font and ‘Marvin Powell’ is in capital letters that makes it stand out and it also tells us that it is his guitar case. This could influence my design because I could have a main design on the main body of the case.

This is an acoustic guitar case with the English cross on it. The designer has made it look like the flag has been scratched and is coming off. The cross has been placed over the widest part of the case so it will not look out of proportion if it was higher up the guitar case. The case has been shaped to the guitar like the previous design I analysed, it also has the same layout of the clips which hold it closed, two on the neck and one behind the handle. The case is for someone who likes to let people know what nationality they and are proud of it. The main colours that have been used are white, red and grey that have been placed on a black background. This could influence my design because it is a simple design but has been made to look complicated.

This is an Epiphone Zakk Wylde ZV Custom Bullseye Guitar case. It is an electric guitar case because it is not as deep and the previous cases. This is a rectangle shape rather than being shaped to the guitar, this means there is more room in the case for storing wires for the guitar to make it electric. It has the same amount of clips to hold the lid of the case down with two one side of the handle and one on the other. The illustrations look like skulls, bat wings, flowers and a crown that has been done in black and white to make it stand out and look professional. The typography used for ‘Zakk Wylde’ and ‘Epiphone’ looks old fashioned and gothic and the ‘ZV’ looks like it is the middle of some leafs/claws/chains.  The typography works with the design because it ties in with the gothic theme with skulls and bat wings. This could influence my design because I could do a different shape for the case rather than having it the shape of the guitar and have a design which has a simple colour scheme.

Comparison of the “Marvin Powell Pig Pickes” and “Epiphone Zakk Wylde ZV Custom Bullseye” cases

The first difference you notice is that the “Marvin Powell” case is in the shape of the guitar whereas the “Zakk Wylde” case is a rectangle shape. They both have three clips to keep the case closed and a handle that is in the middle of the case to make it easy to carry.  They both also have the same case cover, which is black to help make the designs standout. The “Marvin Powell” case has a more old fashioned design on the front of it whereas the “Zakk Wylde” case has a more gothic look to it. The colours that have been used in the “Marvin Powell” are gold, red, blue, white and black. The banner that has “Marvin Powell” on it has been outlined with red and then filled in with gold which helps bring it to life, whereas the design on the “Zakk Wylde” case has been done it white to give it a gothic feel to it. The typography used on the “Marvin Powell” case has been done in an old fashioned style to keep the retro feel to the case going. “Pig Pickes” looks like it has been done by hand in gold hand and then has had red filled around it to make it look 3D. Also there is an old car in a circle underneath the “Marvin Powell” banner that keeps the style of the case going. The “Zakk Wylde” case has got a mixture of skulls and bat wings to emphasis the gothic theme, it also has a crown on the scull in the middle that has got leaves coming out of the top and there are leaves and what looks like ribbons covering part of the bat wings. The typography used to write “Zakk Wylde” and “Epiphone” looks like it has been done in Victorian style writing that keeps to the gothic theme. The “ZV” that is in the middle of the case looks like there are claws around it or they could be chains coming from under the skull. These two cases show that you can fit a reasonably sized design on any type of case and still have room to advertise the name of the company or band the case is for. The “Marvin Powell” case is for a band and the “Zakk Wylde” case is done for a custom that was made by “Epiphone Zakk Wylde ZV Custom Bullsey cases”.

Logo Analysis

This is a logo for “Scratch Pro ®”. When you look at the logo you instantly know that they have something to do with guitars. This logo is very simple but effective because it is in black and white. The main part of the logo is the guitar design above the name because it tells people what the company does. The type of logo is pictorial literal because it is a picture and it is literally a guitar. The logo is laid out with the guitar neck shadowing the name of the company and the body of the guitar is filling the space to the left of the name. The typography used to create “Scratch” looks like handwriting in bold and “Pro” is in capital letters and it is has been done in very thin letters.

This is a logo for “Life Demo”. The guitar has been placed deliberately in the centre of the logo because that is what is going to be in the main part of the show. The wavy design that is around “Life Demo” is the same on both sides of the guitar, this creates a symmetrical design and a space for the words to be fitted into. The typography used do to “Life Demo” looks like handwriting which has been given a colour gradient. The guitar itself has been done it black/grey and white which blends in with the background and the only other colour is the wavy design which has been done in orange. This brings the logo to life and makes it standout against the dull background.

This is a logo for “You Rock Guitar “. The first thing you notice is that it looks like it has been stuck onto the wings and there is some liquid splattering out of the sides. The title sounds like it is complementing the actual guitar and the logo is a tribute to it. The title has been placed in the middle of the wings to give it importance. The wings look like they have been drawn on, they drew one wing and then copied it to make them look the same which gives it symmetry. The splatters coming from behind the title suggests that it has been ‘slapped’ on to the wings with some type of liquid and it has come out of the sides. The typography used for the title looks like Victorian style writing which makes it standout. The colours used are white, black and blue which helps make it eye catching.

Comparison of the “Scratch Pro” and “Life Demo” logos

These are two guitar logos I have chosen to compare. The main difference in these two logos is the complexity of the designs, the “Scratch” logo is just an outline of a guitar which has been done by ‘negative drawing’ which is when you just draw the outline of the object and the shadows to make the design. Where as the “life Demo” logo has a complex design in comparison, it has swirls coming from the bottom of the guitar that then goes around the typography before joining at the top of the body of the guitar.  Around the body of the guitar there are sunbeams that fill in the gap behind the typography. The colours involved are different shades of orange, yellow and grey. The brighter colours have been used to make the typography and the swirls standout on the black / grey background where as the “Scratch” logo only has black for the outline of the guitar and the typography and a thin line of white around it so it sands out if it was put on a dark background.  The typography for the “Scratch” logo also looks handmade, that is the only similarity these two logos have, even though they have a similar style of typography they still look really different. The background of the “Life Demo” logo looks like it has a spotlight shining from behind it whereas the “Scratch” logo does not have a background. These designs are completely different in the way they catch the eye, the "Scratch" logo catches the eye with its simple design where as the "Life Demo" logo catches the eye with the bright colours and the bold font used for the typography.

Poster Analysis

This is a poster for a guitar instead of a case which is what I’m going to design but I can get some good ideas from this. The way poster has been designed makes it easy to know what it is about with the guitar zoomed in and it is in the middle of the page at a slight angle. The background is interesting with swirls and what looks like sunlight rays coming from the bottom centre of the poster. Also the background has been given texture by the way it has been coloured in, the red, white and blue on the sunlight rays has been layered with gaps in to allow the other colours to show through and on the main background it looks like white paint has been sprayed on to a blue background.  The typography used to create “ROCK” looks similar to the sunlight rays in the sense that it is also patchy. It is also in capital letters so it stands out in the middle of the page.

This is a poster of an electric guitar done by Tiffany Miller. It is a very simple design compared to the previous poster. The guitar is the main part of this poster because it stands out on the black background and also because of the swirly mosaic design on the guitar. The typography used to create “Electric Guitar” looks like handwriting which gives the poster a handmade feel to it. The colours used stand out against the black background, especially the reds, blues and yellows. I could use a wide variety of colours my poster because it looks effective. The guitar design is used to catch the eye of the customers. The design on the guitar also looks like it is an incite into a machine with cogs and chains connected to each other to move some parts.

This is guitar poster from “Fender” which I can take more ideas from such as the way the guitars have been positioned to underline the name/make of the guitars. The name of the guitars has been positioned in the middle of the poster with the product they produce underneath it. The further you go up the poster the more complex the background design gets, it starts off with a group of swirls and then the neck of the guitar helps bring the design up to the top of the poster. The colours used are many different variations of reds with the white, metal and wood colours on the guitars. The typography used to create “Fender” looks like old fashioned handwriting with a bright outline to help it stand out against the complex background design which has probably been done in Photoshop. The layout if the poster has the guitars crossed over like they are 'skull and cross bones', the name of the company being the skull and the guitars being the cross bones.

Comparison of the “Tiffany Miller” and “Fender” posters

These posters show two very different ways of promoting guitars. The “Tiffany Miller” poster is more about the design on the actual guitar where as the “Fender” poster is more about the design of the poster to make the guitar stand out as well as making the brand of the guitar stand out in the background. The “Tiffany Miller” poster has a handmade feel to it because the title looks like it has been writer by hand and the design on the guitar is a mosaic that would have to be done by hand. It has a black background makes the guitar the most important part of the poster where as the “Fender” poster has a very creative background which draws the eye towards the name rather than the actual guitar. The “Fender” poster has used different variations of the same colour where as the “Tiffany Miller” poster has used lots of different colours in the mosaic design which makes it look like there is more happening on the poster, but the different gradients of the same colour makes the “Fender” poster look professionally done.  The “Fender” poster is more pleasing on the eye to look at because there is more happening on the page and it is promoting the company name and what they do where as the “Tiffany Miller” poster is promoting the designs that she does on guitars. They are both good posters that do what they were deigned to do but do it in a different way, “Tiffany Miller” poster focuses on the actual guitar and has a plain background with simple typography and the “Fender” poster focuses on the background design more than the guitars. There are several differences in the posters that are obvious, the first one is the background designs and the second one is the designs on the actual guitars. The "Tiffany Miller" poster has a very simple background in black and the "Fender" background is complex. The "Tiffany Miller" guitar design is far more complex than the "Fender" guitars. The "Fender" poster uses the background to catch the eye and the "Tiffany Miller" poster uses the actual guitar design to catch the eye.

PROJECT EVALUATION

The Personal Project went well I felt because I managed to finish all of the outcomes I intended to create, the Logo, Guitar case and the Guitar poster. The hardest part was thinking of what to design for the project, once I had decided on a subject I managed to go straight into the designing of the outcomes and the research. Some of the designs that influenced my designs are shown above in the blog alongside the evaluation of the pictures and a comparison of two images.
I also managed to design an IPod cover, laptop skin, poster and guitar case with the logo on. The have all come out really well and they look a lot better when mounted on to card. Designing them was interesting because I had to warp the image to get it to fit on to the guitar case and the laptop skin.
Deigning the outcomes on Photoshop was a challenge to start off with but after I looked at some tutorials on YouTube it became easier to design them and they now look really good. One thing have missed out in my book is an image of the layers I used to create the “Equinox” logo and the final guitar poster.
Overall this project was harder than the CD project but I think the final outcomes for this project were better than the CD project.
