Pendulum Immersion CD cover

Describing the packaging
The actual packaging has been made of plastic with the case being made of plastic and the album art made from paper. The type of case that has been used has been used is called a jewel-case. There are two transparent layers on the CD case that are hinged together, the from and back so you can see the album art and the titles of the songs at the back. The CD is held in place by a plastic insert which clips into the plastic case. The cases opens with two hinges that are holding the two pieces of transparent plastic together and it is held closed by two little clips on the side of the top layer of plastic.

Imagery used in the surface design of the packaging
The CD cover relates to the title of the album because the title is called 'Immersion' and the on the cover there are two people underwater surrounded by sea creatures. It has been created in Photoshop because of the complex design and the different layers that have been used to create the effect. The message that is being sent out is that the sea is alive with different creatures and that humans do not belong and cannot survive down there. The colours that have been used are blues, greens, purples, graded white for the title, skin colours for the two characters in the centre of the cover. These were used to help create the sense of being underwater.

Describing the typography that has been used
The name of the band 'Pendulum' is bold and in capital letters, whereas the name of the album, 'immersion' is narrow. The typography was created in Photoshop with the background. It has been placed at the bottom of the CD cover in the middle, which is in a black space which makes it stand out.

Overview
The mood of the piece is sad because there are two people submerged in water but it is also happy because they are reaching towards each other. The target audience is young people because of the eye catching CD cover. This might influence my own design because of the interesting CD cover which has been displayed in a simple but effective CD case.

Sustainable group CD cover

Describe the imagery
The CD case is made from card. The type of case is a simple folded case. It has two slots in it which is where the CD and the list / book of the tracks go in. The CD case is made from several pieces of card to create a strong back and to also create the pockets for the list / book and it opens by having two folds close together at the back of the case.

Imagery used on the packaging
The title, ‘Sustainable Group’ has been helped been put across due to the way the cases has been made and the type face used. The word ‘Group’ has been done in bold capital letters and coloured in green with a recycling sign next to it which is promoting the fact that people need to recycle.

Typography that has been used
The title of the song and the artist has been placed at the top in small capital letters and the title of the group is in the centre of the cover in capital letters. ’Sustainable’ is in the same font as the smaller writing but in a larger size and ‘Group’ is also in capital letters but bold and coloured in green with a black outline which helps it stand out from the brown / white background.

Overview
The piece makes you feel self-conscious about recycling, it makes you wonder if you do enough recycling yourself and if you don’t you should do more. The target audience is for everyone because it only has a simple cover. This case might influence my own because of the way that it has been created out of card, which is easy to work with.

Paper folded CD case

Describing the packaging
The case is made from decorated paper which has been folded to create this square, envelope style case. There are no transparent layers to let you view the actual CD. It is held closed by putting the ‘lip’ of the top through a slot in the paper with a piece of cord / string going through both pieces and it will open by removing the piece of cord / string and lifting the main end of the paper out of the slot.

Imagery used on the packaging
The only imagery on the packaging is the decoration from the paper which has a grey background with patterns of a face of a bird. It has a white infill and there is a grey outline and the same image with the inverted colour scheme so the outline is white rather than it being filled in white. Some of the pictures are overlapping and at different angles to others.

Overview
The mood of the case is creative because of the way that it has been created. The target audience is everyone because there is a template that can be found on the internet so the audience is whoever you want to design it for. This will influence my own case because of the different coloured paper can be used to create a great effect to look at.

Unit 3 CD Design

These are my examples of Miles Donovan.

I created this at home

I created this at college

These were created in Photoshop

STEP 1
Once inserting the image into Photoshop change the contrast levels by holding 'CTRL' and 'L'. After making the image darker to bring out the detail duplicate the layer. Use the duplicated layer to create the bottom layer of the stencil, to do this click on 'Image' - 'Adjustments' - 'Threshold' and then adjust it so there is only the basic features showing and then get rid of the white background.

STEP 2
Duplicate the original image again and do the same again by selecting 'Threshold' and change the level of detail so that the fine  detail can be seen. Leave some of the white in to help pick out the fine detail, when you have both layers visible you can see the little details.

STEP 3
To add colour create a blank layer and place the layer above the original background in the layer list. This means it will show up in the background when the white has been deleted from the picture. Using different coloured brushes to pick out the detail of the picture and add colour to give it life.

My Miles Donovan spray paint stencils

This is the first stencil i did

This has a ink trace over it to bring out the detail

This is the second one i produced

This is the second stencil with the ink trace on

STEP 1
Print out the two layers individually from Photoshop and glue them onto card, then cut out all the white from the pictures.

STEP 2
Place the stencil on another piece of card and spray one of the layers and let it dry, (i did the green first green). Now place the  second layer on to and make sure it is lined up with the previous layer then spray the second layer (mine was red) to finish the stencil.

STEP 3
Print out the original picture and make sure it is the same size as the different layers you printed out. Then put a piece of acetate over it and use some Indian ink to trace around the edges, use a paint brush or a graphic drawing pen.
