Exam

IN-DEPTH ANALYSIS

This is a DVD cover for the film “Iron man”. On the front cover it has the main characters faces in the shadow of the iron suite, which is used by Robert Downey, Jr. who plays Tony Stark. There are also some of Tony Starks employees underneath his face. The guy in the middle has a different expression on his face compared to the others this might because he will betray the others someway in the film. On the far right of the front cover is a little insight into what the ion suite can do. The iron suite takes up most space on the front cover because it is the main part of the film. The actors’ names are at the top of the cover in smaller typography with their last names in larger capital letters because they get recognised more than the first names. The title of the film is at the bottom in the middle, it is done in capital letters and in the same colours as the iron suite, red and gold. There is a circle in the middle of “Iron Man” which is meant to be a part of the iron suite.
On the spine of the DVD cover it only has a few things on it. It has a Paramount DVD company logo at the top, and then there is an image of the iron mans face, which is ten followed by the title of the film which takes up most of the space, and then underneath that there is a DVD code and a DVD Video logo.
On the back cover there is a picture of Tony Stark and the iron suite behind him, which suggests he has something to do with it. There is a short blurb about the film that has been shaped around his arm. There is also a list of the special features that also come with the DVD. Underneath that there is a band of images from the film that separates the information about the films age rating, and who helped produce the film, which companies sponsored the film, information about copyright and the disc type. The typography used for the information is a very thin and it is difficult to read. This was probably done so they could fit everyone’s name on the back of the cover and to try keep the editors happy by putting their names on but it is not clear that everyone will be able to read it.

My film is going to be like a James Bond film where there is going to be the same character in different film titles. I am going to design five DVD covers and posters to go with the project which will have different film titles, these are 'Human Revolution', 'No More Pain', 'Fading Away' which I did two designs for and 'Augmentation'. I also need to design some billboards to go with them to create the collection of a DVD cover, a poster and a billboard for each of the film titles I came up with.

This is a poster for “Ghost Rider”. The film plot is set in the American Old West, the Devil, Mephistopheles, sends his bounty hunter of the damned, the Ghost Rider, to retrieve a contract for a thousand corrupt souls from the town of San Venganza. Because the nature of the contract would give Mephisto the power to bring Hell to Earth, the Rider refuses to give him the contract and goes into hiding.
The first thing you notice is the two faces in the background who are the main characters in the film, the guy in the left, Johnny Blaze (Nicolas Cage), is the ghost rider who has to collect the corrupt souls. The girl on right, Roxanne Simpson (Eva Mendes), was Johnny’s childhood sweetheart. The guy in the middle is Johnny Blaze as the ghost rider on his bike. The faces are positioned how they are because these two characters have feelings for each other and the ghost rider is the one thing that stops them from being with each other, that’s why the ghost rider has been placed in the middle.
The title “Ghost Rider” has been done in capital letters and done in a metallic colour that has some red flames behind it. It has also been placed at the top in the middle of the poster. The names of the actors are above the title have been done in the same typography and in capital letters also but have been done in gold, this makes there names stand out from the poster and so they do not get mixed up with the title.
The background is a mixture if smoke and flames from the ghost rider bike. The main colours are different shades of red, yellow and black, this gives the poster a sense of what hell would be like.
The caption “His curse became his power” is in capital letters that are white which are in the middle of the two characters. This is another reference to the ghost rider becoming between the two characters.  There is also a small logo for DVD Video on the bottom right that lets the customer know that it is a poster of a film.

This is a billboard for “The Haunted Mansion”. The first thing you notice is that it is for a horror film without having to read the title of the film. When you look at the billboard you can tell that there will be something coming out of a coffin. Where there would be the name of the person in the coffin it says ‘Walt Disney Pictures’, this shows that professional film directors have made this film. The typography used for the billboard is a good style for the film because it is similar to Victorian / gothic style. The size of the design has to be big enough and clear enough for people to notice it and be able to read it when passing in a car. The colours used for the coffin stands out from the background of the sky because it has been done in different gradients of blue to create an illusion of the coffin being rounded on the sides. The red for the inside of the coffin and the red roses on top of the coffin stands out from the background as well because of the brightness of the colour. It also has the release date of the film on it to let people know when it comes out, rather than it saying ‘OUT NOVEMBER 26’ it says ‘GET OUT! NOVEMBER 26’ suggesting that it is a must see film. There is also a link form the ‘GET OUT!’ to the arm coming out of the coffin, it is telling the dead person in the coffin to get out and start haunting the mansion.

Moodboards

This is showing all the different types of outcomes that I could do for the exam unit and I finally chose to do the Film Branding & Marketing brief.

This is showing the exam brief I will be doing at the top left and the images are examples of what i will be designing. The exam brief I have chosen is 'Film Branding and Marketing', it says I have to outline the plot, film name, logo, DVD cover and two promotional items such as a poster and a billboard.

Initial Hand Drawn Designs For Film Titles

This is meant to show a the title that is done on a background which is mounted on a piece of metal which will be mounted on something when I use it in a DVD cover design. The reason why I chose the
name 'Fading Away' is because the main character is becoming more of a machine due to the injuries that have happened to him.

The name 'Replacement' came from the idea that the main character will end up having some of his body parts replaced because of an explosion, hence the robotic arm under the title.

This is a reference to the main character who is becoming more of a robot than a human because of the technology used to save his life, which means he has robotics that have replaced his arms, lags, chest and some parts of his brain.

This idea is more about the design of the typography because I could not think of another name for a film title. A replacement name I have thought of is 'Human Revolution' which I think could be the name I eventually use for the project.

The way I came up with this name was just typing different words / phrases into Google Translate, so I typed in 'From God' and translated it in to Latin and it said 'Deus Ex' which looked like a good name for the film. It is relevant name for the film I have chosen to do because the main character was a cop who was known for his high conviction rate. The 'Gangsters' of the film would be glad to see the cop off the streets but he gets saved by the technology that is available at the time and he is still able to carry on with his job.

Initial Computer Designs For Film Titles

I used this Link to get an idea of how to make this effect, as you can see this looks nothing like the tutorial. I put my own spin on this so I can say "I did this".
Start in Photoshop by creating a new canvas, type a phrase using a classy looking font. Split the words in to there own layers and move them into position to form a balanced layout. Give some letters some major distortions by adding plenty of ink marks, but keeping the words legible. Adjust the opacity of any layers that are looking to prominence.

I followed another Tutorial on the same website to create this design. The website I have been using has given me ideas and has shown me how to do different effects on Photoshop.
Open up photoshop and create a new canvas with the sizes 1500 x 720px and fill it with Black, grab your text tool  and choose a nice bold font. Center the text on the canvas and then rasterize  the layer.
Use the pen tool to cut up the letter A and then make the selection, once the selection has been made select Edit>Cut and then Edit>Past to put the other half of the A on to a new layer. Now do this for all the other letters. Now you overlay a texture, I used concreate. Now you go back to all the individual layers of the different parts of the letters and add drop down shadows, then I added a picture of smashing glass over the top.

To do this I followed this Link to create a really good effect, I did not follow it step-by-step because I wanted to make it my idea.
Create a black background and add any text in the middle and add some blur to it. Then distort it by adding a wave effect and then change the layer blend mode to colour dodge. Render some clouds on a different layer and place it under colour dodge layer. Now add some smoke to the letters.

This was another Tutorial I used to make this weird, space looking effect. This was one of the favorite tutorials I have followed.
Have a new canvas and render clouds but have the colours as black and dark blue rather than black and white. Now add a new layer and add noise to it then hit 'OK', then change the brightness levels so some of the white dots disappear. Add text in the middle and add some layer styles to it so it gets some gradient on the letters. Duplicate it several times and add waves to it so it goes all wispy, do this for all text layers but one.

This Link should help clarify what I have said below, I think this is one of the best I have followed. It was one of the most challenging tutorials I have done because I had to make it 3D in Adobe Illustrator which I have not used much.

This is the same as the image above. The difference is that I have used my own pictures of flames rather than using the pictures they provide for you.

When designing this Human Revolution title I first had to start in Adobe Illustrator to create the 3D effect for the word Human. Once I made it look 3D and decided on the angle of the writing I then had to get colour the outer walls black of the letters so when I put it in Photoshop it wold blend in with the black background and leave the inner walls showing. I put a cloud layer over the top and changed the layer blend mode to overlay to create a smoke effect with light and dark patches.

These are a few of the pictures I took to use in the picture above.

This is what I had to do in Adobe Illustrator. I had to make the word human in to 3D text, once I did that I had to take the 'lid' of the text off to show the depth. I made the text red because then I could see the different light effects of the different sides of the walls in the letters. I then had to make the outer walls black so it would blend in with the black background I had ready in Photoshop.

DVD Cover Ideas

I still need to add the picture of the main character underneath the title and write the blurb for the story. I have also used one of my fire pictures for the background on the back cover and I will write up my own DVD information.

I used two pictures of posters I made before and I made them smaller to fit in the DVD case dimensions. I have added a blurb and the information at the bottom about who helped contribute to making the film.

Main Character Edits

The face has been done by using different pictures of robot parts which have been overlayed the left side of the face.

I prefer this one to the first edit because it is done using one photo which does not make it look disjointed like the first picture.

This set of characters were done by taking pictures of my brother with and without sun glasses on. I then blended the pictures together for the first one but I decided that it did not look as good as the one which just used one picture. I then added a texture to his face to make it look different to the other side of his face. I used a picture of some rods to go on his neck to make it look robotic. I added a picture of flames that I took in the background, I got rid of the background and used the blend mode to hard light to give the flames a warmer colour.

Poster Designs

Textures I Could Use

More Poster Designs

The title was done by adding a concrete colouring to it. Then I sliced the layers and put each piece in its own layer so I could do the shading to create depth and once I was happy with the effect I merged all the layers to reduce the amount of layers in the layer pallet. I then placed the face on top and reduced the opacity level, I then put some smashed glass in the middle of the face and changed the blend modes of the layer to make it look sharper.

The background was done first by using the cloud effect and then I changed the layer blend modes to make the white in the clouds stand out and then blacked out the rest to leave a central glow. Then I added the title and used the wave and blur effects to make the title fade a bit. I then added some smoke to the letters to make it look like it is fading away. Then placed the face over the top and changed the opacity level of the layer so the background can show through.

To do this I first of all made the background by making it black and then added a noise effect to create the star effect in the background. Then I added the title and duplicated it about 6 times, keeping one of the titles normal I then used the wave effect on the other titles to create the stand effect. The I changed the colour to turquoise so it stands out, then on the original title I added a blue outer blur and then I put a green overlay on the top of the poster. The added the face under the green and title layers.

This was done by using brushes to do the water stain effect on the background and then I typed 'No More Pain' for the title, I then added some more water stain marks on the letters to try and make it look like the ink was running. I then added the face in the background and changed it in to black and white, then I placed it under the other effects.

The background was made out of lens flares in each corner and one in the middle, then I added the chrome effect to it and then used the twist effect to give it the twirl effect, then I added a layer blend mode. The one thing I do not like about this is the edge around the title.

I changed the effects on the lens flares to create this weird portal effect in the middle which makes it look like the people have come through it. I prefer the way the title is laid out and having two identical people makes it look a little bit more intimidating.

This was done in Photoshop like the other ones that look similar to this. The design was inspired by a picture that I saw that was done in Photoshop. I need to add something in the background to fill in the black space above the design. It was done by making the titles in Adobe Illustrator so they looked 3D, I then put it into Photoshop and positioned them at the top and at the side of the building. I changed the colour of the picture to a grey colour to give it a strange feel to it.

I added the picture of the main character to fill in the background but it looks a bit dominant in the whole deign which draws attention away form the title.

I made the face smaller and added clouds to fill in the black background which looks better than the previous designs. I will try and blend the face into the background and I made the face smaller to make it less dominant.

I think this one look the best out of the three because if does not have the face imposing on the design. I might need to add some light in to it so it stands out more.

I have added lamps to the title to the title to make it stand out and I lightened the whole picture so it does not look dull, however it is looking a bit green / yellow.

The lights on the title helps bring attention to it. The lightening of the picture helps bring the clouds out but there is still the problem of the face being dominant.

I think this is one of the best ones because picture stands out and it does not have the face in the background. I will attempt to blend the face in to the background eventually because I think that this could be a good DVD cover. I need to make the front faces of the title lighter so it is easier to read.

These seven pictures show the different stages of development I did to come up with these designs. At the moment I am not sure which one I would choose, but I have an idea what one it might be. In the last three I have added some lighting for the title "Human Revolution" and changes the lighting of the overall picture to make the lighting standout a bit more.

This is the original picture I took for the background of the poster designs.

To do all the perspective poster designs I used this Tutorial, just like the others I did not follow it step-by-step and I used different pictures and effects to create them. Making theses designs took the longest out of all of the designs.

This is what I had to do in Adobe Illustrator to make sure I got the perspective right for the title. I had to put in my own vanishing point lines which are quite hard to see, there is one point you can see on the left but the one on the top and on the right had to go off the page so they got cut off.

Billboard Designs

This is a billboard design for the film I am creating for my graphics project. One problem I think there is with this design is the flame for the background because it blends in with the title.

This was done by using a picture of a billboard and then fitting my pictures over the top and making it fit into the frame. I added in the light from the three lights at the top, I looked at other film billboards to find out what they put on them. They only have the date of the release, the film title and a few characters from the film.

Final Character Deign

What I Need To Do

Preparation Work

Project Evaluation

The whole project went well overall, I have made more outcomes than I expected to do in the time allowed. I managed to do five DVD covers, five posters and five billboards and one CD deign for my final outcome. Throughout the time leading up to the exam I have been inspired by other peoples work and I have learnt new skills by following tutorials. All these things have helped me improve my designs and the quality of the final piece of work. The parts of the project that went well for me were the in-depth analysis, initial ideas that were don on the the computer because I could use the skills that I learnt from the tutorials. The development side of the project went well because I managed to show lots of different designs of the same ideas and I have tried to describe how I made them with a link to a tutorial I used for inspiration.
In the exam I managed to make a series of DVD covers, posters and billboards for my film(s) which have the same character on, the reason for that was because they were all related like the James Bond films where it was the sam character but in a different film title. The exam as a whole went really well because I managed to get a lot done in the first six hours, I got all the DVD covers and posters done to a good quality standard. The final DVD cover, poster, billboard and CD was for the 'Human Revolution'

This is the final billboard for my film, it was done by using a picture of a billboard, then I placed the picture I made for the poster and placed it over the top and trimmed it down to fit properly. I then made the background by using the gradient tool in Photoshop, after that I made the clouds in the background cover the whole billboard so it did not leave any gaps. Once that was done I placed the picture of the face next to the title and removed the shoulders so it blended in to the scene better and then I changed the layer blend modes until I found one which looked good.

This is the final DVD cover, it was done by scaling down the picture I made for the poster, which is the front cover. The back cover was done by deselecting layers to make it look different, one difference I made was turning the lights off to make it look like a different time of day. Then I placed the blurb on top and the same with the film information and all the logos and barcode.

This is the final poster, it was done by creating the title in Adobe Illustrator and then copied in to Photoshop where I positioned the title on top and to the side of the building. Once I got the title positioned I added a brick textur and some lights across the top of each letter to make it stand out. Once I was happy with the way it looked I added some hue/saturation layers to create the dark effect, I placed the lights and brick layers above it and then added another hue/saturation layer so it will be lighter than the rest of the picture. Then I placed the picture of the face in the background because he is the main character in the film.

This is the CD for the DVD, it was done by placing the main part of the poster on to a CD size template I made in Adobe illustrator and then I overlaid the face of the main character in the centre of the CD.
