Lee Clow -Pioneer advert – hand

Factual information
The artist is Lee Clow who is the creative designer for pioneer. The copy writer wrote the slogan “seeing and hearing like never before”.  My first thoughts when I saw the advert was disgusting, scary, weird and ambiguous. We did this as a class to share ideas of what we thought about the poster.

Describe the work
The method that they have used is shock advertising to get the audiences attention. They have also used the al seeing eye and the hand of Hamsa for the symbolism. It has also been seen in the 3 masons. It has used surrealism to get the attention of the audience. It has used photo montage to create the image which has been done in Photoshop. The image has been done in black and white which gives the image a stylish, clean or contemporary look and the slogan has been written in a type face which is associated with horror films.

It was made in 2008/9 which was the height of using shock advertising. There are different meanings:
The Eye - to covert an object
The Eye - it is the window to the soul (James Joyce)
The eye - The all seeing Eye - which is a western religion, the eye of god looking over mankind (the American dollar bill and free masonry)
The Eye – Hamsa or Khamsa – African for protection in warding off the evil eye

The slogan “seeing and hearing like never before” is advertising Pioneer TVs and 5.1 surround sound.

Layout
The hand has been put in the center of the page and the eye has been put in the center of the hand and the whole page. The ears have been put in the tips of the fingers. The main colours in the poster is black and white which gives the poster a clean / stylish look.

Dave McKean – Social work advert

Factual information
The artists name is Dave McKean. It’s a poster with lots of different images to give meaning. It’s a modern contempory, imagery design which has used modern techniques to create. The tile for the work is ‘People are isolated’ – Social work advert which is found on Dave McKean’s website. This was done as a class analysis to help us get used to writing in depth analysis.

Describe the work
The theme is about social work and the way a social worker got someone to get back out into the world. Dave McKean is trying to encourage people to get involved in social working even though it is a difficult job which has a bad reputation due to news coverage, the benefits are not great, the hours are long and huge case loads / lack of funding. The poster has a social / cultural background to it. Symbolism of the map in the background is to represent a journey of the client Sonya. The signpost represents her being lost and she is also disabled which makes her scared to interact with people. The poster is opening peoples eyes to take social work up as a job. The heart symbolizes love, which can also be a negative. The crosses on the map show graveyards, which represents the death of her mother, which Sonya was over reliant on which made Sonya unable to care for herself.
The door symbolizes that Sonya is unable to open the door to let people in physically and mentally. Eventually Sonya and the social worker start talking about the TV series ‘Coronation Street’ to help Sonya open up. There are files of different people who are also in social care. Sonya has started to go out in the world but she will only travel in a cab and she is gaining in confidence. The bus at the bottom of the poster symbolizes her independence and freedom. She has finally finishes her journey. She has started to socialize with people and started to make friends. It finishes with her living in a town on her own, which can be symbolized by the little houses in the bottom right hand corner.

Layout
The poster stats with natural dull colours and the further you go down the poster the colours become brighter to symbolize the way her life is becoming more enjoyable. It’s a photo collage with the editing of the photos in Photoshop and the layout is done in Illustrator, which you can tell because the type at the bottom right of the poster has been done by using type on a path.

The press has put a negative taint on social worker careers by only publishing the worst things that happen in the social work area, rather than focusing the good things that social workers do.

Billie Jean – 30 years of Nike basketball shoes

Factual information
The client is Nike Retro, France. The designer of the poster is Billie Jean who designed it for the celebration of 30 years of Nikes basketball shoes. When I first saw the poster I thought that it was about basketball straight away, it looks old school, a doodle in the back of a book, very retro and it was done in biro. It was done in 2004 and it won the Epica award.

Describe the work
The intentions for this piece of work are to tell a story about Nike. It immediately tells us its about sport and there is a    street / graffiti side as well because there is a space invader at the bottom which is a reference to someone. The style is out of the 80’s. The main function of the poster is to advertise the celebration of the 30 years of Nike’s basketball shoes.

Layout
The main focus of the poster is the Nike tick on the trainer because it is in the middle of the page with everything happening around it. There is no space on the page for anything else to fit on the page and it is all a random doodle in the back of a workbook.  There is an exaggerated drawing of a typical basketball player. It has been drawn to represent the time in school when you are not listening to a teacher and you are free when you start doodling in the back of your exercise book.

Jenny Tran – Intolerance destroys the fabric of America

Factual information
Jenny Tran designed this poster after 911. It is to represent the culture of America, Jenny Tran loves her country but she thinks intolerance is destroying America from the inside out. It is done on the American flag which is the most iconic symbol for America and the fact that it has been defaced shows that the country is being destroyed form the inside. Jasper Johns is an artist form the 1960’s who is a culture reference to this piece of work.

Describe the work
The theme of the work is the culture of America and how it is changing. The idea of the poster is to make people realise what they are doing to the country. The poster is a picture of the American flag which looks like it has been worn out, the lines going across the flag are comments that were posted about the Muslims after 911 and Jenny Tran has Photoshoped them on there to create the effect of worn out jeans. There is a black hole just off-centre which represents the fact that America is being destroyed from the inside out. The only colours on the poster are red, blue, white and black. At the top is the most faded part of the flag and as you go down the black becomes thicker and when you get past the black whole the red becomes brighter. To the bottom right of the black whole it has the title ‘Intolerance destroys the fabric of America’.

Layout
The American flag is the background of the poster to show that it is the main part of the poster. The comments after 911 have been arranged in a way which defaces the flag. The main whole is just off-centre with the title on the bottom right of it.

Jamie Reid – Never trust a punk

Factual information
Jamie Reid published the poster in the 2007 but it was done in the 1970’s which was the height of the punk era. Some of his work was used as the album covers for the Sex Pistols. Jamie Reid is an iconic British artist, most readily associated with the 'ransom' style artwork that defined the punk movement, especially with the Sex Pistols album and single artwork. 'Never Trust A Punk'. A new twist on a classic Reid work and the 'never trust a hippy' slogan.

Describe the work
The theme of the poster is the arrival of punk. It is a very ‘in your face’. He has defaced the Queens head by blacking out the eyes and mouth, then putting ‘Never Trust A Punk’ at the top is saying that you cannot trust a punk to do anything. The reason it is on the Union Jack is because it makes it stay in people’s minds. It is also a promotion poster for the Sex Pistols in 1977. It is saying that you cannot make me do anything and I can do what I want. It is a rebellion against the establishment around at that time.
Before the punk era people would not have even thought of defacing the Queens face because it was treason. It is also symbolizing a type of freedom that people have discovered and they do not care what the government think. The face of the Queen is right in the middle of the Union Jack which puts a cross through the face of the Queen which shows that they are saying no to the Queen.

Layout
‘Never Trust A Punk’ has been cut out of newspapers and rearranged to spell out the title. The Queens head has been placed in the centre of the Union Jack with the eyes and mouth covered up with black paper / tape. It is a simple design but it communicates a huge message to the government and to the public.

Tim Marrs – Pepsi Max can design

Factual information
Tim Marrs uses digital and mixed media to create his work. Mixed media is a painting which combines different painting and drawing materials and methods, rather than only one medium. Any materials can be used, such as pages from magazines, newspaper, photographs, fabric, soil, or packaging to make a collage. Digital media is a form of electronic media where data is stored in digital form. It can refer to the technical aspect of storage and transmission of the "end product", such as digital video, augmented reality or digital art. He helped inspire Tracy Locker the original designer of PepsiMax.

Describe the work
The theme of the work is to get people to buy the Pepsi Max energy drink. Tim Marrs is trying to make the drink look cool to drink by making the label of the drink look interesting. He has put muscle cars, speedometer, speakers, amplifier controls and a musician on the label to show a freedom that the drink will give you. He has made the name of the product the biggest and most colourful object on the label so it stands out on the grey, blue and black background. The arrow coming out of the pickup truck is pointing to the musician, this is symbolising the way that Pepsi Max could affect your life.

Layout
Tim Marrs has made put all the items that gives someone freedom in the background of the label. The arrow is saying that you could turn into this if you drink it, it has been made big and it also stands out on the blue background. It has been done in photoshop to create the different layers. It is also a digital collage which uses different images to create a visual representation of what the drink will do to you.

Ian Wright – Cover Portrait

Factual information
Ian Wright designs collages, a collage is a form of art in which various materials such as photographs and pieces of paper or fabric are arranged and stuck to a backing. The image is of Ian Wright which has been done using bits of note paper. I found this work on Ian Wright’s website. My first thought when I saw it was what is it made from? And then I noticed it was note paper.

Describe the work
The theme of the work is a portrait of Ian Wright. The intentions of this piece of work are to capture the realism of someone’s face using paper rather than drawing and it shows people that paper can be more exciting and you can do more with it that what people think. It is also symbolizing the amount of paper that someone uses at work or school they could have used that to create a piece of art work. It also symbolizes the way people feel about paper work they have to do for work or school because the expression on the guys face shows that he doesn’t like the look of something or the blank expression to show disappointment about something. It looks like he is looking into your soul and he is disappointed with you and you need to change.

Layout
The way the different pieces of paper have been organized to create the face has managed to get a texture to the skin of the face and the depth in the eyes and the shadows around the neck and on the nose. Some of the pieces of paper are bright colours like orange and blue. The way the eyes have been positioned make it look like he is looking right at you and he is disappointed at you. The bigger pieces of paper make up the background and the smaller pieces of paper make up the face.

David Carson – The Rules of Graphic Design

Factual information
David Carson does different types of designing. This piece of work is typography based which is the design and use of typefaces as a means of visual communication from calligraphy to the ever-developing use of digital type is the broad use of the term typography. This piece of work was on display on the 5th of February 2011 at the David Carson’s The Rules of Graphic Design seminar in London.

Describe the work
The theme of this piece of work is to advertise his seminar in London and to get as many people to attend as possible. There are ink spills and burn marks in the background. The title has been done in different fonts and the thicknesses of the letters are different. It is done on a blank background to get the best eye catching effect with the bright letters. The title has been arranged around the burn mark which tells us that the burn mark is the wrong way to do graphic design and the clean white area is the right way to do graphic design. The “S” at the end of “Rules” represents the people that have tried and nearly succeeded in graphic design. The burn mark also represents the people who have tried to do graphic design in a way that has put a bad tinge to the meaning of graphics.

Layout
The title has been arranged around the burn mark to get the title to show up the most. The poster has been done in photoshop to get the blends of the burn and the ink spill at the bottom and the title could have been done in illustrator because of the way the different types and type sizes have been used.

Cristiano Siqueira – Hero

Factual information
Cristiano Siqueira uses vector graphics which is the use of geometrical primitives such as points, lines, curves, and shapes or polygon, which are all based on mathematical equations, to represent images in computer graphics. Vector graphics formats are complementary to raster graphics, which is the representation of images as an array of pixels, as is typically used for the representation of photographic images. It was done on the 2nd of May 2010.

Describe the work
It is a picture of a man sitting down in sand and he is slowly being eroded away by the wind. The man is representing what external factors can do to a human being. I this picture the external factor is the wind which is slowly taking away the “skin” and only leaving the skeleton of the man. It symbolises what can happen to someone who has not been cared for and is open to risks, it slowly destroys them as a person and the person inside of them. It also represents what happens to someone who dies, the flesh starts to disappear and the skeleton is the only thing left that let you know that something was there before. There is nothing around the statue but sand, this could also mean that if the world was to end the last things to disappear would be the statue which is the last thing to represent the people who were once there.

Layout
The man is looking and pointing at something in the distance and the wind is blowing the remains of him in the opposite way. There is only clouds and sand in the background to say that nothing lasts forever. The colours used are very dull and not many used, they are earthy colours used on the man and greys and white used for the clouds.

Peter Callesen - Cut To The Bone II

Factual information
Peter Callesen does paper art, Paper art is the arts of folding, cutting, shaping of paper. This work was done in 2008 and is part of a collection called “Cut To The Bone” with many different variations of style The bulk of Peter Callesen’s work is made from plain white sheets of A4 paper, chosen for the symbolism as well as the colour and size. Peter Callesen said this about the work he does,
“By taking away all the information and starting from scratch using the blank white A4 paper sheet for my creations, I feel I have found a material that we are all able to relate to, and at the same time the A4 paper sheet is neutral and open to fill with different meaning. The thin white paper gives the paper sculptures a frailty that underlines the tragic and romantic theme of my works”.

Describe the work
It is a skeleton breaking out of his skin. It shows a freedom of the inner self which is trying to escape the claustrophobic skin and experience the outside world. The skeleton has been done in 3D and the legs are in 2D. The way the ribcage has been done is amazing because it has been individually joined up and the ribs are so thin. It is also about the way you can feel for someone but you cannot tell them what you feel, but your insides are trying to get out to tell that person what you feel. It is an emotional piece of work as Peter Callesen said that his work is a tragic and romantic theme to his works.

Layout
It has been put in the middle of the page and half way down is the rolling of the skin, the skeleton is looking at you and smiling to show that he is glad to be out of the skin that he has been in. the background is red to show the shadows of the skeleton against the red background which represents the blood which has been spilled whilst he has been trying to get the skin off his bones.
